In what seems to be a homophobic hate crime, Jussie Smollet fell victim to an attack by two people who yelled racial and homophobic slurs at him, wrapped a rope around his neck, and struck him in the face repeatedly. Authorities say they are definitely investigating this as a hate crime.
Smollet publicly came out as gay back in 2015 and has been receiving a little backlash since then of course.
According to Chicago police, Smollet was just walking dow the street when attackers began hitting Jussie and even poured an “unknown chemical substance” on him. Before they fled, one of the offenders wrapped a rope around his neck.
Authorities say that Smollett was able to go to an apartment nearby after the attack where his manager called police. When they got there, Jussie still had the thin rope around his neck. Smollett was taken to the hospital for minor cuts on his face and neck and was later released.
Details of the case are still to be unfolded of course but in the meantime fans and supporters of Smollett have expressed their condolences and their grievance for the trial that Smollett has had to endure.
