At an alarming rate, New Yorkers are contacting city health authorities over fears that bleach or other household cleaners/disinfectants are being ingested.
Over the 18 hours after President Donald J. Trump made a bogus claim that injecting bleach or disinfectants could cure the novel coronavirus, people in New York are trying it, the Poison Control Center reports.
The Poison Control Center, a sub-agency of New York City’s Health Department has managed a total of 30 cases of possible exposure to disinfectants between 9 p.m. last night and 3 p.m. this afternoon. A spokesperson from the agency confirmed these allegations. So far, none have died nor required hospitalization, but that could change at any moment. In comparison to this time last year, the numbers were worth a double-take!
Out of the 30 cases reported, nine were specific to Lysol, ten bleach and the other 11 were other general household cleaners.
In case you missed it, during President Donald J. Trump’s White House briefing last evening (Thursday 4/23/2020), he suggested doctors may be able to cure the coronavirus by injecting disinfectants like bleach or Lysol directly into the lungs of their patients. “Because you see it gets in the lungs and it does a tremendous number on the lungs so it’d be interesting to check that… It sounds interesting to me,”Trump said, turning to his health advisors and asking them to look into the matter. This afternoon, following push back from numerous medical experts, he now claims that his dangerous suggestion was a joke. Alleging he “said it sarcastically”.
Despite his sarcasm defense, health and emergency agencies, and even the producers of the chemicals took his comments seriously and warned Americans against listening to the president.
New York City’s Health Commissioner Oxiris Barbot tweeted “To be clear, disinfectants are not intended for ingestion either by mouth, by ears, by breathing them in any way, shape or form. Doing so can put people at great risk.”
Please do not ingest, inhale, nor inject any household cleaners. It will not help you in any way, shape or form. Stay safer at home and wash your hands often.
