Renowned Boxer Pernell “Sweet Pea” Whitaker hit by car, dies

TAMPA, FLA- Notable boxer, Pernell “Sweet Pea” Whitaker was struck by a car in Virginia Beach on Sunday night July 14, 2019.

According to Fox News, police received a 911 call on Sunday night about a pedestrian being hit by a vehicle. When police arrived on scene, they found the victim that was hit.

The driver remained at the scene as they identified Whitaker and pronounced him deceased.

Whitaker’s son, Devon said “I guess he was wearing dark clothes, the road was dark and the driver did not see him.”

The incident is still under investigation by Virginia Police.

Whitaker’s talents never went unnoticed. He represented the United States in the 1984 Olympic Games held in Los Angeles. There he claimed the victory over Luis Ortiz. In addition, In 2006, Whitaker was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.

Following retirement, “Sweet Pea” continued to remain involved with boxing and became a trainer in Virginia.

Pernell “Sweet Pea” Whitaker’s legacy lives on through his wife and children.
