It is evident , that young people do not understand the penalty of pulling or shooting a firearm , one should know the 10 -20 LIFE Rule. If you pull a gun state mandated ten (10) years sentence if you shoot a gun , state mandated twenty (20) year sentence , if you shoot someone, state mandated life in prison. The youth today are armed. As more teens begin to acquire and carry gums , there is a sharp increase in gun deaths and injuries. Most would agree this is a problem.
Think about the information for, the CDC National Center for Health Statistics morality report online 2005 nationwide for 2002, gun violence killed around 2,893 American Children and teens ages 19 and under , a decrease of only 1% from the nationwide 2001 total of 2,937. While these numbers have been steadily decreasing over the past years , an average of eight (8) young people killed in the U.S. is still too many. Even more information from the Harborview prevention and research study says that firearms used in 72% of unintentional firearm deaths and injuries, and in firearm suicide attempts and completions for people ages 0-19 were stored in the residence of the victim , their relative , or their friend . And finally in 2002, the gun death rate for African American males ages 15 to 19 was 56 per 100,000, a large disparity compared to white males of the same age (14 per 100,000). For black males ages 20-24 the gun death rate was even higher at 120 per 100,00, an even greater disparity compared to white males of the same age group (23 per 100,00). This is also according to CDC National Center for Health Statistics mortality report online 2005.
One must look at what motivates young people to carry guns and commit crimes with them. Defense attorneys for the Nathanial Abraham, who served 11 years for the death of Ronnie Greene, argued that environment and economic status of the neighborhood, absent fathers, which leads to absent mothers, causes young people to have less supervision. For Nathanial acquiring a .22 caliber rifle was facilitated by a lack of supervision. Today, we have a new breed of young people , many of whom the public has forgotten. To answer the question, why do young people carry guns , we ventured into the streets and here is what some of the youth has to say
Power:“The control, the power you have got when you have got that in your hand”
Posturing: “Its fashionable”
Protection: “Out here on the grind don’t nobody want to get robbed”
In 2021, an 11-year-old girl has died three weeks after she was shot on Chicago’s Far South Side. Another afternoon,a 4-year-old boy was wounded in a shooting in Washington Park. Also 2 weeks ago there was another fatal shooting in child vista sunset view park that left a 17-year-old boy dead. These are just a few cases that represent a larger problem. As Americans, minorities especially , we need to account for gun control. Not only are our young people bearing arms, but also being put to death by them.
