A heart-wrenching incident unfolded as 29-year-old Cassandra Sims, a daycare owner, was fatally shot by her boyfriend, Deandre Martin, who then took his own life. Tragically, Sims’ young son, Royal, witnessed the horrifying event, and the child celebrated his 4th birthday just days after the devastating ordeal.
Community and Family Response: Speaking Out Against Silence
The distressing incident occurred on August 11 in Racine, Wisconsin, leaving a profound impact on both Sims’ family and the local community.
Authorities revealed that Sims’ son was inside the residence during the incident and sought help from a neighbor.
Royal’s father, Jerelle Williams, shared his sentiments, saying, “She will be deeply missed. He will definitely miss her.” Williams emphasized the hidden signs of domestic violence that often remain unnoticed until it’s too late.
“There are signs, but they often go unseen from the outside. They can be silent pleas for help, and we only realize it when a mother leaves her child. It’s heartbreaking to say what he saw, but he witnessed it. It’s a memory he can never erase.”
Jori Chambers, co-executive director of Racine’s Women’s Resource Center, expressed the heartbreak of the situation, stating, “This tragedy shouldn’t have occurred.”
“There are resources like ours available to help people escape these situations and keep them safe.”
Sims’ sister, Tori Bender, echoed the sentiment, urging others not to remain silent: “Don’t stay quiet. Cassandra suffered in silence.”
Turning 4 Amid Grief: Son’s Birthday Celebration
It’s important to note that Royal celebrated his 4th birthday shortly after losing his mother in the tragic incident.
With a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles-themed party, Royal’s father shared, “Today, I will smile for him.”
Bender mentioned, “A week later, all we can do is support him through this.”
Our thoughts and condolences go out to the family and loved ones of Cassandra Sims.
