A significant development unfolded in the case of rapper YNW Melly as a South Florida judge made a pivotal decision on Thursday. The judge removed the lead prosecutor, Kristine Bradley, from the double murder retrial, following claims from the defense team that critical information concerning the lead detective’s alleged history of questionable conduct was not disclosed.

Broward Circuit Court Judge John Murphy, exercising caution, granted the defense’s motion for recusal, citing concerns about the potential conflict of interest if Bradley were to be called as a witness regarding the credibility of the investigator, Mark Moretti. While the judge did not find Bradley’s integrity to be compromised, the decision was made to ensure a fair trial process.

With jury selection slated to commence next week, no immediate replacement for Bradley has been announced.

The defense’s request for the removal of the Broward State Attorney’s Office from the case and a possible dismissal of the charges stemmed from Assistant State Attorney Michelle Boutros’ testimony. Boutros revealed that she overheard Moretti allegedly asking a Broward County deputy to falsify information about a search warrant execution in an area outside his jurisdiction, involving the confiscation of a phone from Melly’s mother during a witness tampering investigation.

According to defense attorney Jamie Benjamin, the failure to disclose this information undermined the defense’s ability to challenge Moretti’s credibility during Melly’s previous murder trial, which ended in a hung jury verdict in July.

Prosecutors, however, assert that the interaction between Moretti and the deputy was intended as a jest. They highlight the presence of Melly’s mother’s attorney during the phone confiscation, suggesting that the attorney would have been aware of the deputy’s absence.

Melly, whose legal name is Jamell Demons, faces the possibility of a death sentence if convicted of the first-degree murder charges in the 2018 killings of his childhood friends, Christopher “YNW Juvy” Thomas and Anthony “YNW Sakchaser” Williams. The three belonged to the same hip-hop collective, their stage names all bearing the “YNW” prefix. The 24-year-old rapper is currently detained without bond. Notably, his popular track “Murder on My Mind” made it to the 14th spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 2019.
