Tory Lanez’s legal team is seeking his release from jail as he appeals his 10-year sentence for shooting Megan Thee Stallion. The rapper is currently in Los Angeles County Jail with limited privileges.
A motion for “bail on appeal” was filed for Lanez in Los Angeles on August 28, and a hearing has been scheduled for September 5, according to court reporter Meghann Cuniff.
Cuniff reported on Twitter that Lanez’s lawyers filed the motion to bail him out of jail while he appeals his judgment and sentence. The District Attorney’s office stated that they were not aware of the filing and have not received anything yet. However, the judge’s department has been inactive, indicating that Judge Herriford, who oversaw the trial and handed down the sentence, has been out. The hearing is scheduled for Tuesday.
The motion was filed following an online argument between Lanez’s defense attorney, Jose Baez, and Meghann Cuniff. Cuniff questioned Baez’s commitment, pointing out his apparent vacation in Italy instead of focusing on the sentence appeal. Baez responded by calling Cuniff a “blogger” and accusing her of bias against Tory Lanez during her trial coverage.
The upcoming hearing will be presided over by Judge David Herriford, who has been involved in the case since the trial in December 2022.
It remains to be seen how the court will decide on Lanez’s bail request and if he will be released from jail during the appeal process.
